Hotel De L'Orient, Puducherry
Dune de L’Orient Hotel is the ideal location to stay and enjoy the unique Puducherry French atmosphere and style. The hotel is set in a mansion which dates back in the late 1760 and is located in the heart of the French Quarter. Francis Wacziarg – the founder of Neemrana group of hotels on his numerous visits to Puducherry, discovered the house which was about to be vacated by the French administration as it had been declared unsafe. The building was named the “Instruction Publique” (for which the board is still above the entrance door) and the house was officially acquired in October 1998. Several of the original features, including a few arches and ceilings had to be rebuilt and a major restoration took place. The restoration was sensitively completed to allow for the original 18th century features and atmosphere to remain. Where ever possible, the ancient Chettinad plaster was preserved and the red oxide flooring repaired. The hotel was awarded the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Culture Heritage Conservation in the year 2000.
The property offers accommodation in 14 Grand Heritage Rooms & Suites that are classified in 03 different categories namely Heritage Room, Heritage Superior Room and Heritage Suite. Each of the spacious rooms are air-conditioned and all have a unique finish.
The Restaurant “Chez Francis” offers a truly authentic French gourmet cuisine, Puducherry Creole cuisine, Seafood and Indian heritage cuisine. The food is made-to-order, using fresh vegetables, with many of the ingredients being sourced straight from their organic farms at Elephant Valley, Kodaikanal and Dune Eco Village. Special arrangements for special meal requests are accepted on prior information and the hotel always tries to do their best to cater to specific guest requirements.
The hotel provides an excellent base from which to explore the treasures of Puducherry.
