Deeppura Garh, Sewad Bari

After purchasing the dilapidated Rajasthani fortress some two years ago, the Italian visionary Maria Grazia Baldani has transformed it, with the help of architect Philippe de Villegas, into a boutique hotel of extraordinary beauty. The fort has been restored with impeccable taste, making this an ideal escape for rural Rajasthan.

One of the most intriguing additions to the Rajasthan circuit, this majestic 200-year-old fort has returned to its former glory providing a cool oasis of courtyards, manicured secret gardens, roof terraces and water features, not to mention the impressive granite swimming pool.

The hotel comprises 10 sophisticated rooms and suites, mainly centered around a marble courtyard. Each unique the whitewashed interiors are filled with soft pastel furnishings, pretty coves, intimate seating areas and the occasional turret with sizeable marble bath tub. There are two large suites situated near the swimming pool, with sizable separate living rooms, vast bathrooms and access straight out into the pool. The state of the art tadlac bathrooms provide the height of luxury throughout the property.

Within the main fort complex there is there large inviting sitting room arranged around a roaring log fire with deep sofas. Beyond is the main library and stylish snug bar. Whilst there is an inviting dining room to enjoy, one is spoilt for choice with an abundance of jewel coloured alcoves and terrace rooms in which to enjoy a truly romantic evening in private, by candle light.

Surrounded by a village and farmland, the views are superb whilst inside the fort you can explore its labyrinthine maze of pretty courtyards and gardens finding endless nooks and crannies in which to while away an afternoon with a good book. Beyond the pool there is an inviting gazebo in which to lounge on the sunken day beds, escape the sun or have a little alfresco lunch.

The local staff are all so eager to please and having been trained from stonemasons into hotel waiters a little patience and humour, will reward you with some of the kindest and most genuine hospitality in return.

Ideally Deeppura Garh fits in well to a north Rajasthan itinerary with Nagaur, Bikaner and Jaipur all a couple of hours drive away.
