Located on the western bank of the Yamuna River, the city of Agra, founded in 1504 by Sultan Sikander Lodi, was besieged in 1526 by Babur the first Mughal Emperor. During the mid 16th and 17th centuries Agra, by now the Mughal capital, witnessed a remarkable spate of expansion and architectural development as each successive emperor tried to outdo the last. As a result, Akbar, Jehangir and Shah Jahan have all left behind an impressive legacy of Mughal masterpieces.  Most notable is The Taj Mahal, the world’s greatest monument to love.

This marble mausoleum was commissioned by Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his beloved wife Mumtaz.  Considered one of the world’s most impressive architectural wonders of the world, it took approximately nearly 20 years to build and with its symmetry, intricate design, sculptured gardens and sheer scale – it really is the jewel in the crown of the Mughal empire.

Firmly on the tourist trail, holidays to Agra form part of the golden triangle along with Delhi and Jaipur.  Steeped in history and replete with several World Heritage Sites, this city is a must.  Along with the famous Taj Mahal the 16th Century Agra Fort is an exceptional sight to behold.  Constructed of red sandstone this fortress houses, several beautiful palaces and mosques.  It was both a show of military strength and the royal residence of Akbar the Great.

Often referred to as the baby Taj, Itimad ud Daulah is an exquisite Mughal mausoleum of a Persian nobleman.  The mausoleum is arguably considered to be the precursor of the Taj Mahal, being the first monument constructed entirely of marble, heralding in the new era of Mughal architecture.

Luxury holidays to Agra extend beyond just the impressive mausoleums, expansive fort and monuments, for Agra is also home to several beautiful parks and gardens.  As such it is well worth a visit to Mehtab Bagh, especially as one of the best vantage points from which to view the Taj Mahal, at the main fountain you will see the gardens are perfectly aligned with the ones at the Taj.

Just outside of the city Fatehpur Sikri is an awe inspiring deserted palace city that is not to be missed.  Once the capital of the Mughal Empire, this city of victory is a true monument to empires past.
